Gentner Drummond’s Statement On State Question 836

Oklahoma City, OK — As Oklahoma’s Attorney General, I’ve always believed that voters—not politicians—should decide the outcome of initiative petitions. With signature gathering now underway for State Question 836, I took time to study the issue carefully rather than rushing to judgment because political bosses say so.

I understand why many Oklahomans are frustrated. With our state ranking last in voter turnout—only 18.57% voted in the 2024 primary—it’s clear people feel the system isn’t working for them. However, I will not support a California-style “jungle primary.”

Our election system isn’t broken—our state leadership is. From our former Speaker’s and our current Governor’s misplaced priorities and policies, political games have distracted from the real challenges hardworking Oklahomans face. We rank 50th in education, we have the highest insurance rates in America, our roads need repair, homelessness is rising, and our mental health system is broken.

People aren’t staying home because of our primary system—they’re staying home because they’ve lost faith in our leaders to fix things.

Oklahoma is the reddest, most conservative state in the nation. It’s time we governed like it. Let’s stop chasing gimmicks and start focusing on real conservative solutions that lift up our schools, rebuild our infrastructure, and strengthen our families and communities.

The groundswell behind SQ 836 is a wake-up call to Oklahoma’s political leadership. Oklahomans are demanding more—and they deserve more. They expect us to solve the problems that are holding our state back and to lead with vision and integrity.

Oklahoma is great—but we can do better. And as your next governor, I intend to lead that charge.
